Etymology: Because of the unclear meaning without etymology. After Hdn. ll. cc. ἀπὸ τῶν ἐν Σκίρῳ (suburb of Athens [s. σκίρον], known as dwelling-place of wenches and gamesters) διατριβόντων. Whether byform of κίραφος = ἀλώπηξ? Cf. ἀλωπεκίζειν ἀπατᾶν H. and Schrader-Nehring Reallex. 1, 337.
